With the winter months having crept upon us without much warning, prayer times have become increasingly close together, often leaving scarcely a two-hour gap in between Dhuhr and ‘Asr salah.
This means that with all five prayer times of the day following so closely after one another, it often feels as though the available time to do salah slips away before you have even had the chance to realise that it’s time to get up (or get down) and prostrate.
As we all know, regular salah is wajib (or obligatory) so to help avoid letting prayer times escape us, here are some handy tips on making the most of our precious time:
With the majority of us owning smartphones and tablets, the Islamic services on offer are almost endless. Try setting your phone alarm to 5 minutes before each prayer time, giving you time to get ready for salah. There are also apps and even Twitter accounts that alert you when each adhan is called, allowing you to have a system of constant reminders.
Many of us have found that doing wudhu once or twice during the day is sufficient for all five prayers, meaning that we are always ready and prepared to join the jama’ah or to pray at home. To keep on top of this, try refreshing your wudhu as often as necessary to make sure that when prayer time arrives you can pray immediately.
These icy cold mornings make fajr especially difficult to get up for, often meaning that we press ‘snooze’ on our phone alarms to stay under our duvets for only a few minutes longer. Remind yourself that prayer is better than sleep by not keeping your alarm close to your pillow, but at the other end of your bed or in another room, so that the only way to turn it off is to leave the warmth of your bed; this way, you are already up and it is easier to do your wudhu and pray than it would be to turn the alarm off and go back to sleep.
The deen is advice and, as advisors, we should be reminding and advising each other to get up and pray on time. If your friend or family member rises to pray, regardless of what you are doing or whether or not you even realised prayer time is upon you, get ready to pray with them. We all need some reminders now and again, so be the one who is rewarded for their helpful encouragement.
