The Art of Exfoliation

Exfoliation is the quickest, easiest way to get healthy, glowing skin BUT it is often the most neglected part of a skin care regime. Qualified Beauty and Holistic therapist Humma Sharif gives the low-down.

Dead skin builds up on the outermost surface of the skin, the Epidermis (pronounced epi-dur-miss) resulting in a dull, uneven, lifeless complexion. Many people splash out on expensive products in the hope of achieving glowing, healthy, Hollywood skin but more often then not, these pricey products end up sitting on dressing tables for years on end! With the simple yet effective art of exfoliation, one need not go through the stresses and strains of finding that magic potion, nor is there any need to burn a hole in your pocket!



Dead skin cells which move to the outermost layer of the skin as new cells generate are continually being worn away and shed. This natural process is called Desquamation (pronounced desk-wam-ation). However, as we age, this process slows down. Putting in place a mechanical process of exfoliation through the use of sugars, salts, crushed nuts, looffa and pumice etc is a means of accelerating the natural process. Thus, exfoliation is loosening and removing dead skin from the epidermis through artificial means. Even after just one treatment of exfoliation, skin will appear soft, smooth, radiant and healthier. Exfoliation provides the pores with a deep cleanse, encourages new skin regeneration and helps the skin to absorb skin care products like moisturisers. When exfoliating your face, you are in effect removing dead surface skin and oils that lead to problems like blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and acne. If you don’t remove these cells regularly, they can clog the sebaceous (oil producing gland) pores and make your skin look dull, lifeless and patchy. Exfoliation also increases blood circulation and removes toxins from the skin.



I often have people ask me how often they should exfoliate the skin. My reply? Listen to your skin, if it feels sore or irritated after a treatment, stop using it immediately. Those of you who have sensitive facial skin may only want to exfoliate once or twice a month with a gentle, natural product. The rest of your body may benefit from a weekly treatment but again, if you find this is too much for your skin, cut back. It is impossible to recommend the same skincare regime to everyone as we all have different skin types and what suits one person may not necessarily suit the other. So therefore, it is vital that we get to know our skin. Take a long look at your skin, be brutal, what do you like about your skin and what do you dislike? Are you dry or oily or a combination of both? Maybe you have sensitive skin or are prone to dryness. Whatever your skin type, it is wise to have a look at different products, try them if needs be, get advice if you aren’t sure: just do not neglect your skin! We fail to remember that just like everything else we own, our bod- ies are an Amanah (Trust) from Allah ( ) and we will be questioned about whether we looked after these gifts or just simply neglected them.
