Sorry for keeping you waiting

Sumayyah Talibah leaves a poem behind.

i had the bags packed
frayed rugs were carefully stored
Holy Qur’an wrapped
shoes lined up at the door
heard the call to prayer
kneeled down on the naked floor

all of the cupboards were bare
bookshelves held naught but dust
empty rooms full of memories
of aunties who clucked and fussed
sad smile and heavy heart
but go i must

O Merciful One
will You erase this blot i see
this gray that coats my vision and
sends a tremble through my knees
